NS 80MAC's make a surprise visit to Potomac Valley

Some how these 2 SD80MACs got away from their captive service

in the Altoona-Cresson-South Fork area. Thanks to heads up from

Jeff Hawkins their were plenty of Railfans out to record their journey

back north to the Altoona area.

I was able to catch them on the Hagerstown line near MP 14.4

Antietam Station, Sharpsburg, Md .

80MAC 7202 & 7211 lead NS northbound 227

These 2 were not wasting any time when they came past the station at Antietam

I was hoping for a snow flurry shot, but that didnt happen

Nice to see them in Maryland, Hope they come back.

CSX-xConrail 80Macs

CSX 800 and 802 with E101 empties at  Mtn Rd, Weverton, Md  08-03-2

I saw these loco's on one of their first break in runs in Feb 1996

making round trips  between Altoona -Conway on  CR Coal and

Merchandise trains I was only doing VHS Video at that time,

so I have no photo's from that day.  After the Conrail split up the

CSX units started to show up almost immeadiately on  coal

trains from Cumberland . These coal trains usually stay in Brunswick , Md over night. Then go to the ex-Conrail Benning yard located in Washington DC the next day and then to power plants located on the Pope's creek branch.

Catching one of the MACs on a coal train is fairly common in the Brunswick area.  Usually D742  will have one or more in its consist.  Also lately the have shown up leading on Merchandise trains like Q296,  Q398 and on the Q400 trains  running  between Cumberland, Md and Richmond, Va.

They are rare and only 30 were built

Conrail  bought EMD's 2 Demo units and built the other 28 at their Altoona Shops

After the Conrail breakup CSX got 13  units  Road numbers 800-812

All CSX units were renumbered 4590-4602 to make room for new GE ES44AC units in 2006-2007

NS got the other 17 units  road numbers 7200-7216

They could be found in 3 Different paint schemes on CSX as shown below
